Dr. William Hayes Doxey, the loving patriarch of a large family and a gifted teacher, died at home in Alpine on February 1, 1994.

He was born on Independence Day in 1923 in Salt lake City to Tom Graham Doxey and Emma Pearl Hayes, the youngest of their eight children.He married his high school sweetheart, Elithe Winegar, on April 15, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their 50 year marriage was sweet and fruitful. They stand together as the parents of ten families: Warren and Michal Cottrell, Sharlee Doxey and Marlene Garnham, Clair and Helen Rogers, Mark and Debbie Doxey, Rick and Kristine Kiholm, Gretel Doxey, Carl and Mary Ann Shoff, Jon and Becky Doxey, Jared and Jena Doxey, and David and Molly Dean. Those who knew him soon felt part of his family which include 52 1/2 grandchildren, five of them married and starting their own families; 10, almost 12, great-grandchildren and a handicapped foster daughter, Ethel Stallings. His family also includes brothers and sisters: Tom H. Doxey, Mildred and Ed Porter, Phyllis McAfee and Georgia Pratt and more than a hundred nieces and nephews as well as many friends and education associates.

Bill served as a captain in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. An educator for 40 years, he worked in Granite and Alpine Districts as a teacher and principal and for USIU University as a provost of the Colorado Alpine Campus. He enjoyed teaching and taught from 3rd grade to graduate school. He taught principals to be better principals, teachers to be better teachers and parents to be better parents.

A faithful member of the LDS Church, Bill was active all his life. His favorite church calling was the nine years he spent teaching the priests' quorum in Winder 7th Ward. After waiting 50 years, he served as a missionary and Branch President in Smithers, British Columbia Vancouver Mission until September 1993.

He lived by his family motto: "Sanctify your lives by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that your home may become a Holy Place."

Funeral services will be held Sat., 2:30 p.m., February 5, 1994 at the Highland Stake Center, 5335 West 11200 North. Friends may call Friday, 5-7 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 So. Redwood Road and Sat. at the church 12:30-2 p.m. Interment, Alpine City Cemetery.
