Emily Elizabeth Schettler Ellingson Kilpatrick age 83, died on January 16, 1994 in Seattle, Washington at the home of her son and daughter-in-law Lloyd and Shirley Ellingson.

She was born on September 9, 1910 (which was also her father's birthday) in Salt Lake City to Ernest Frederick and Emily Eliabeth Davis Schettler. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Art with a minor in Zoology from the University of Utah in 1933, which provided her the opportunity to study art under the direction of LeCompte Stewart. She was also able to study with Alvin Gittins in the late 50's. In 1937, she married Lloyd C. Ellingson, an attorney from Wisconsin and a member of the 1932 U.S. Olympic Ski Team at Lake Placid. In 1945, Lloyd was killed in a plane crash and Emily returned to Salt Lake City with her two young sons. As a means of support for herself and her family, she began teaching art and science in the Jordan School District and continued to teach in the Salt Lake County School District for 25 years until her retirement.

In 1961 she married Dr. Elmer Kilpatrick, an Internist and Chief of Staff at Holy Cross Hospital. It was this second marriage which permitted her the opportunity to travel the world, which she undertook with great enthusiasm and delight. The highlights of her explorations included China, Tibet, Japan, Egypt, Africa, Saudia Arabia, England, Mexico, Greece, Italy and the Carribbean. Friends and family with whom she shared her slides, beautiful photography and memories of her travels will never forget her willingness to impart all that she had learned and come to love.

Emily earned her pilot's license, was an accomplished skier, artist, dedicated teacher, and equestrienne with a lifelong love for animals. She was a very talented seamstress and hand knitter, who sought beauty and perfection in each piece of clothing and sweater that she created.

She is survived by her sons, Paul Lloyd Ellingson, Salt Lake City; and Lloyd S. Ellingson and his wife Shirley, Seattle and two grandchildren; Shawn Evan and Laura Ann Ellingson, Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest and Paul Schettler and two sisters, Mary Schettler Howell and Miriam Jean Schettler.

An Endowed Scholarship Fund in Emily's name for students of traditional art has been established at the University of Utah. Donations may be made to the Development Office, 304 Park Building, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112.
