The Big Eight, bolstered by the addition of the top Southwest Conference schools, signed five-year contracts totaling $100 million in what is believed to be the most lucrative college football television deal for a conference.

Beginning in 1996, the contracts with ABC-TV and Liberty Sports, a family of regional cable entities under the Prime Network banner, will pay $20 million annually.Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor bolted the SWC for the Big Eight and greatly strengthened the "Big 12's" negotiations. Their full membership will not take effect until 1996.
