The Malaysian government confirmed Wednesday that censors banned the movie "Schindler's List."

An official at the Malaysian Film Censor Board, who refused to allow his name to be used, said he could not give the reasons for the banning. But in a letter to Universal International Pictures, the movie's distributor, the board said the Oscar-winning film was "propaganda with a purpose for asking for sympathy (for Jews) as well as to tarnish the other race." It did not specify the "other race," but presumably meant Germans.

About half of the 19 million Malaysians are Muslim.
