Clinton's decision:

He'll be in Charlotte

SAN DIEGO - The guessing game over President Clinton and the Final Four is over.

He's going.

Clinton had been saying all week he'd like to attend the Arkansas-Arizona semifinal in Charlotte, N.C., but there were lingering doubts about whether he would attend.

Those doubts ended Thursday when aides said he would fly straight from his vacation in Southern California to North Carolina on Saturday.

Clinton, a diehard Razorbacks fan, was diplomatic when a Wildcats fan shouted "University of Arizona" at him during his morning jog.

"It's going to be a good game," he replied.

He was more appreciative of the day's next basketball reference - a backboard at an elementary school that was decorated to say: "Arkansas 1. See You in Charlotte."

600 women apply for America's Cup tryouts

SAN DIEGO - Nearly 600 women have applied for tryouts for the first all-women's America's Cup crew in the three weeks since the concept was announced, the America3 Foundation said Thursday.

"We're delighted about the public's response to our announcement," said Bill Koch, America3 chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement. "This enthusiastic reaction ratifies our belief that an all-women's America's Cup team is an idea whose time has come."

The America3 coaching staff has begun reviewing applications and will pick about 50 women to come to San Diego for on-the-water tryouts.

Nine women chosen March 9 as the initial core team will also participate in the tryouts.

BYU women rip Utah in tennis

BYU's 21st-ranked women's tennis team continued its strong play, swept to a 9-0 win over rival Utah Thursday night.

"I'm pretty pleased with the play tonight," said Cougar coach Ann Valentine. "It's tough to play well so close to finals, but we were able to do what we needed to do and it was a good win for us."

BYU dropped only one of 19 sets played Thursday when the Utes' Heidi Chinchiodo won the first set from Julie Menefee at No. 3, before Menefee came back to win a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision.
