The Oscar-winning film "Schin-dler's List" will not be screened in Malaysia following a government decision to cut several scenes, the movie's local distributor said.

"We will not release the movie," said a spokesman for United International Pictures in the Malaysian capital.Deputy home (interior) minister Megat Junid Megat Ayob said last Sunday that several scenes of sex and violence in the film needed to be cut.

"We stand by our statement that the film should not be cut. If it has to be . . . we will not release it," the UIP spokesman said.

The National Film Censorship Appeal Committee had decided there was one scene depicting violence and five to six others "depicting immorality," Megat Junid was quoted as saying by the national Bernama news agency.

Malaysia had initially banned the film, directed by Steven Spielberg, but agreed to review the decision after being widely criticized. UIP had appealed the ban.

The censorship board said the film was banned because "the story reflects the privilege and virtues of a certain race only."
