Alfred J. Neilson, age 73, former Washington, D.C. lawyer and prominent Salt Lake City businessman, died April 14, 1994 in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Neilson served as Executive Vice President of Neilson Brothers Energy Company, which he organized with his brother, Rulon K. Neilson in 1977.From 1959 until 1977, Mr. Neilson served as Executive Vice President of Skyline Oil Company, an oil and gas exploration firm that was active in the Rocky Mountains and Gulf Coast areas. In 1977 Skyline was merged into Texas Eastern Corporation, a major diversified energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Neilson was born in Logan, Utah, on July 16, 1920 to Peter Matt and Adelaide Cornelia Keaton Neilson. He received his early education there and graduated from Utah State University in 1942. He received his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and practiced law in that city for many years. He returned to Utah in 1959 to work with his brothers Preston and Rulon Neilson in Skyline Oil Company.
Mr. Neilson was a member of the Washington, D.C., and Utah Bar Associations, and was a member of the University Club of Washington, D.C.
Mr. Neilson is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in various positions in his ward. He had served as a member of the Board of the Utah Opera Company, and on the board of the University of Utah Civic Ballet Association, a predecessor of Ballet West. He also has been active in support of the Utah Symphony and other cultural organizations.
He is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Ellen N. Barnes and Mrs. Adelaide N. McAllister, of Salt Lake; two brothers, Judge George D. Neilson, of Salt Lake; Roy Harold Neilson, of Washington, D.C. and a sister-in-law, Marilyn H. (Mrs. Rulon K.) Neilson, of Salt Lake; as well as many devoted nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Preston M. Neilson, Rulon K. Neilson, and Horace W. Neilson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 12 noon, Monument Park 20th Ward, 2795 East Crestview Dr. (1300 So.), Salt Lake City. Friends may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 So., Monday evening 6-8 p.m. and at the ward on Tuesday 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment, Tuesday afternoon, Logan City Cemetery (1200 East 900 No.)
