Sylvin L. Van Orden, of West Valley City, Utah, who lived through almost the entire 20th Century with the exception of just a few years, died April 26, 1994, in Orem, Utah, of causes incident to age. He was 92.

He was born August 17, 1901 in Lewiston, Utah, to Charles L. and Rose Tucker Van Orden, the eldest of seven children. When he was 4 years old, his parents moved to Ammon, Idaho, where he was raised on a 160-acre farm.After returning home from the Swiss-German LDS Mission in 1924, he married LaVinia Groom on June 11, 1924 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died February 1, 1992. Through the years after his marriage, he had been a barber, bookkeeper, grocer, retail and wholesale salesman, parking lot manager, and deputy assessor in Bonneville County, Idaho, for 15 years. He retired in 1971.

After his marriage he lived in Salt Lake City, Bingham Canyon, and West Valley City, Utah; Boise, Blackfoot, Shelley, Arco, Pocatello and Idaho Falls, Idaho. He lived in Idaho Falls for more than 50 years. In 1987 he and his wife moved to West Valley City.

He was active in the LDS Church and served in various capacities, including ward clerk, assistant ward clerk and financial clerk under six bishops; and High Priests group leader and Seventies president. He was an avid genealogist and participated for many years in the church's Spanish name extraction program.

He loved bowling, and continued bowling well into his 80's. He served as secretary of several bowling leagues in Idaho Falls.

Survivors include two daughters, Jeanne Spackman, Orem, Utah; Naola Van Orden, Sutter Creek, Calif.; son, Dell (and wife, Sharon) Van Orden, West Valley City; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; brother, Everett Altho Van Orden, Oceanside, Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Bus (Lillian) Eaton, Shelley, Idaho; and Mrs. Dallas (Lucille) Robinson, Blackfoot, Idaho.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Roy Lynn Van Orden, a grandson, RoyLyn Watson, brother, June Leroy Van Orden, two sisters, Betsy Schuldt and Leora Christensen.

Friends may call Friday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Golden Rule Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road. Funeral will be Saturday, 12 noon in Idaho Falls 10th Ward, 1200 Dunbar, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Burial will be in Idaho Falls.
