Shane Stant, who whacked figure skater Nancy Kerrigan above the knee, and his uncle Derrick Smith, who drove the getaway car, were led away in handcuffs Monday after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit assault.

The third defendant, Shawn Eckardt, pleaded guilty to racketeering and had his sentencing delayed until July 11. All three face 18-month prison terms as part of their plea agreements.Under Oregon guidelines, they have to serve just over 14 months before being eligible for parole.

Stant and Smith were to be held overnight in the county jail and then transferred into the state prison system.

The three are the last remaining defendants to enter pleas in the bizarre case that captivated the nation's attention over the first three months of 1994.

Stant, 22, and Smith, 29, admitted they conspired with Eckardt and Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, to assault Kerrigan.

The idea was to knock Kerrigan out of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships to improve Harding's chances of winning and making the U.S. Olympic team. Less than $6,000 changed hands in the deal. Eckardt, Smith and Stant thought they would make much more money as bodyguards to worried skaters after the attack was carried out.
