School days will be a few minutes longer and lunch periods a few minutes shorter in most Granite District schools starting next fall as the district builds a little leeway into its schedules to cover emergencies and provide more teacher preparation time.

The district has been too close to the 990-hour requirement set by the State Office of Education, said assistant superintendent Briant Farns-worth. Any emergency that interfered with a full school day meant the affected school had to scramble to make up the lost time.By expanding the school day a few minutes, each district school will be closer to 1000 hours, providing a little flexibility in dealing with unexpected situations, he said.

The Granite Board of Education approved the recommended schedules, which will go into effect with the 1994-95 school year.
