Rulon Tennyson Hinckley, loving husband, father, brother, son, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away May 18, 1994, at the home of his daughter in Provo, Utah.
He was born October 31, 1897 to Alonzo Arza Hinckley and Rose Mae Robison in Fillmore, Utah.He was educated at Utah State, and Brigham Young universities, preparing him to teach and also to farm the land.
He taught seminary in Hinckley, Utah for 17 years, during which time he also farmed throughout Millard County. Later he moved his family to Salt Lake City where he continued farming in partnership with his brother, Arza. He married Lucilla Pearl May on June 30, 1926 in the Salt Lake Temple. She passed away in 1985.
He is survived by his children, Ella Rose H. DeLong (Clair), Richard A. Hinckley (Kay), David O. Hinckley (Kathy), Nadeane H. Spear (Carl), May H. Benson (Reed), R. Mark Hinckley (Linda). He is preceded in death by two daughters, Lina H. Andersen (Dan), and Ruth Hinckley (infant).
He is also survived by 47 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.
His legacy includes service to his God, family, and community. He served as a bishop for 11 years in the 17th Ward of the Salt Lake Stake and in the presidency of the Deseret Stake. He served a mission in France in 1918-20. Later he returned as mission President with his sweetheart in 1960-64. He also served as director of the Hawaiian Temple information center on his third mission. For many years he served as patriarch in the Emigration Stake.
He was the mayor of Hinckley, Utah, and later in Salt Lake City served as chairman of the State Board of Education for several years.
He will be remembered by his family and friends for his exemplary leadership, for he lived as he taught. His great sensitivity to the needs of others has blessed many; his life was a model of courtesy, and he lived in the spirit of gratitude for every blessing. He was valiant in his testimony of Jesus Christ and served Him faithfully throughout his life.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 23, 1994 at the Salt Lake Stake Center, 142 West 200 North, Salt Lake City at 12 noon. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 22, at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, between the hours of 6-8 p.m., and prior to the funeral services Monday at the stake center from 10:45-11:45. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
