Mrs. Theothila Paez Garcia, 91, died May 28, 1994.
Born July 24, 1902 in Altautla, Mexico to Simon and Juana Bautista Paez. As a young child, went to the Mormon colonies in Northern Mexico. She received all of her education there. She came to Salt Lake City as a teenager with her parents and sister, Anna. Her father then built a home in South Salt Lake, where she lived for the past 50 years. She married Andres C. Garcia in 1919; they later divorced.She is survived by her son, Lt. Col. Abraham G. Garcia (Ret. USAF) and wife Barbara, Seattle, Wash.; daughter, Glorya Paez Garcia Schow and husband LaMar P. Smith, Salt Lake City; two daughters-in-law, Rita H. Garcia, Wrightwood, Calif.; and Dolores Malouf Garcia Katter, Salt Lake City; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and several others who called her "Grandma".
Preceded in death by sons, Virgil Paez Garcia, Santiago (Jimmy) Paez Garcia and Elias Paez Garcia; and son-in-law, Ralph A. Schow.
She loved children, plants, gardening, cooking and sewing for her family. Children of the family and neighborhood remember playing in her yard. She lived simply and without pretense. She had a profound influence and was a lasting example to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her independence, strength and stamina. She cherished education and encouraged her children to achieve their goals. She was an avid reader and her mind was always open to new ideas.
The family invites those who wish to contribute in her memory to the Paez-Garcia-Schow Endowed Scholarship, Westminster College, 1840 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84105.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 1, 1994 at 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
