Detroit featherweight Tom Johnson unleashed a 12th-round assault on Benny Amparo and retained his International Boxing Federation title with a technical knockout Saturday.

Referee Tony Orlando halted the bout without issuing a count with just 1:01 remaining when Johnson knocked the fatigued Amparo to the floor.Johnson, 36-2-1 with 24 knockouts, took control of the fight in the fifth round when he switched from inside tactics to outside jabbing. It was his fourth successful defense of the title he won in February 1993 with a decision over Manuel Medina.
