Maya Angelou was all understatement when accepting her latest award.
"I'm a writer. I'm a grandmother and mother and a good friend. I'm an American 6-foot-tall black woman who laughs a lot," the poet said Tuesday in Honolulu.Angelou attended the University of Hawaii's "African American Visions Celebration" and received a Medal of Distinction from the board of regents.
The Pulitzer prize nominee has received acclaim for her books, plays and acting roles. She read one of her poems at President Clinton's inauguration.
