On Wednesday, one of the coolest days in weeks, Spanish Fork officially opened its Community Water Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Although the pool opened to the public June 20, officials waited to have the ribbon cutting until sod could be laid and several other small amenities added, said Mayor Marie Huff. The new facility at 200 N. 400 West is three times larger than the old pool. With a capacity of 1,275 people, the pool has made more money on swimming lessons and general admission in its first 10 days than it did all of last year, said Jack Swenson, Spanish Fork rec-re-a-tion director.

The pool has a surface area of 13,835 square feet and it holds 408,840 gallons of water. It also has an 18-foot-high, 150-foot-long water slide, something most city pools don't have, Swenson said. The slide should increase the pool's revenue by 65 percent, he said, meaning the water park shouldn't need to dip into the city's pocket for funding.

Within the next two weeks, the park also will have a children's play area with wet and dry sand, three sand-volleyball courts, a half court for basketball with a slam-dunk basket, three horseshoe pits and an area for picnics and parties.
