Maxine passed away July 7, 1994 at the family home surrounded by her family who had patiently and lovingly cared for her during her illness.
Maxine was born December 2, 1917 in Panguitch, Utah, a daughter of William Frederick and Rhoana Heywood Sargent. She spent her youth and her education in Panguitch. In her youth, she was the Gold and Green Queen for the MIA.She married Elias C. Butterfield on August 31, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple and since has resided in Riverton.
Maxine loved her family. She loved life. She loved flowers. She loved music. She loved travel. She loved the church and had a strong testimony of the gospel, and especially of the Book of Mormon. She loved people especially the little ones.
Maxine served in both church and civic organizations. She was counselor. President and teacher in the Relief Society and was a visiting teacher for 56 years. She taught in many other organizations.
She had a beautiful voice and she played the piano, and many times she either played or lead the songs in the various organizations. She sang in the Singing Mothers and often played for them.
Maxine served as a missionary with her husband in Ohio, where she helped to convert and activate many members. She served as a leader of 4-H with her girls for many years. She served in the Lady Lions, in the PTA, in the Riverton Flower Club, and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers where she served in both a local and district capacity, as president, vice president, song leader and lesson leader.
She worked as a Volunteer at the Cottonwood Hospital for many years. She was assigned to the New Born Baby Section-a service she really enjoyed.
Maxine served as volunteer and ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple. She loved to attend the temple. She was very generous in taking a car load of sisters with her, not only to the local temples but also to those a distance away. Maxine was always ready to offer and to give service and charity.
She is survived by her husband the the following sons and daughters, Brent (Carolyn) Butterfield, Sandy; Roger (Sue) Butterfield, mission president, Ventura, Calif.; Craig (Becky) Butterfield, South Jordan; Janeal (Kent) Wells, Albuquerque, N.M.; Janean Butterfield, Sandy; Veda (Michael) Burgoyne, Riverton; Rhonda (Kim) Rindlasbach, Riverton. She is also survived by her brother, Bill, and three sisters, Effie Cherrington, Elsie Spendlove, and Lucille Sargent; 30 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Rulon.
Funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at the Riverton 2nd Ward, 12574 South 1700 West. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 South 2200 West, and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Riverton Cemetery.
