Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Zimmerman is the first recipient of the "Excellence in Ethics Award" from the Center for the Study of Ethics at Utah Valley State College.

Zimmerman will be in Orem Thursday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m. to pick up the award and give an address on "Legal Ethics" in the Student Center Theater.He will also take questions and be on hand for a reception following the award presentation.

At 3 p.m. he will present a scholarly seminar on "Legal and Judicial Ethics" to faculty, legal community members and students in room 213A in the student center.

"Our administration, ethics board and ethics faculty believe that Justice Zimmerman is exemplary in his professional, personal and community ethics. We are pleased to honor him with this award," said Lucille Stoddard, vice president of Academic Affairs.

Robert Grow, board member for the Center for the Study of Ethics, said, "As chief justice of Utah's Supreme Court, Michael Zimmerman is responsible for the behavior of lawyers in this community. His guidance in this area has been outstanding."

Zimmerman was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 1984. He was unanimously elected to the position of chief justice in 1933.

He serves on several state and community councils including the Judicial Council, where he was vice chairman of its Task Force on Gender and Justice. He is also a member of the board of Coalition for Utah's Future/Project 2000.
