A local physician has donated $1 million to the downtown conference and performing arts center project for the renovation of the Egyptian Theatre, built by his father.
The gift from Dr. Louis S. Peery and his wife, Jan, surprised project backers, which include Weber State University, the city and Weber County.Peery's father, Louis H. Peery, built the Egyptian Theatre in 1924. A full renovation is expected to cost $6 million.
Peery, 80, had donated $5,000 to the theater renovation five years ago but held off on further donations until a lawsuit to block the downtown center was resolved.
