The bench that Tom Hanks occupied in the movie "Forrest Gump" is like a box of chocolates: You hate to see it disappear.

The bench was removed when filming was completed and replaced by a large trash bin that some residents of Savannah, Ga., call "Forrest Dumpster."But Mayor Susan Weiner says several people have suggested getting the bench back and making it a tourist attraction - complete with a life-size statue of Gump and a bronze box of chocolates.

The city has asked Paramount Pictures to donate the bench.

The plan still has to be approved by two local commissions and the City Council. And not everyone likes the idea.

Historic preservationist Lee Adler questioned whether a monument to a fictitious character belongs in the same park as a statue of Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia.

"I don't think Forrest Gump in the next generation is going to mean a lot, but General Oglethorpe is," he said.
