Following 20 years of officiating for the NFL, #42 has been retired effective January 9, 1995. David Burgess Hamilton passed away peacefully at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center of liver failure.
David's love of football and other sports led him to become a football umpire beginning with Little League, high school, college, and finally on to the NFL. He was scheduled as an alternate official in the upcoming championship playoffs this next weekend.Born March 18, 1933 in Arthur Lynn and Gladys Irene Olsen Hamilton in Salt Lake City, Utah. Received his education at South High School where he was awarded "Athlete of the Year", and on to the University of Utah with a degree in Recreational Therapy. Moved to Atascadero, Calif. some thirty plus years ago where he became an active member of the Rotary Club, consequently becoming the recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship; he was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce in Atascadero, and a member of the Educational Facilities Corporation. David was a strong supporter of instructional and interscholastic programs in his local community. David's career encompassed his football interests and being Chief of Rehabilitation Services at the Atascadero State Mental Hospital.
David married Carol Mildred Webb in 1955.
Survivor include Carol; three daughters, Gena (Michael) Molina of Atascadero, Calif.; Kip Lynn Hamilton of San Diego, Calif.; Rene (Joe) Phillips of Conifer, Colorado; and one son, Tye David of Atascadero; four grandchildren: Melissa, David and Stacy Molina; Brianna Phillips. He is also survived by two younger sisters who will miss their " big" brother immensely: Lynda (Darwin) Colton, and Ellen Tadlock, both of Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the David B. Hamilton Memorial Football Scholarship Fund-a football scholarship established to further the education and advance the aspirations of an upcoming football player, in care of the Santa Lucia National Bank, P.O.
