Kitty died January 21, 1995, at her home in Salt Lake City.

She was the daughter of Joseph R. and Jeanette McKay Morrell of Ogden, Utah. Educated in Ogden schools, she studied violin as a teenager in the Berlin Conservatory of Music, Berlin, Germany. A graduate of Brigham Young University, she served as concertmistress of the University's symphony under the tutelage of the late LeRoy Robertson. Following her graduation, she studied violin the next two years at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Kitty was a member of the Brigham Young University chamber music group concertizing as a soloist and violinist with that group throughout the Intermountain West. Following several years teaching music at the university, she married a fellow Ogdenite, Hugh C. Garner. They resided in Washington, D.C., and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.Upon returning to Salt Lake, she joined the Utah Symphony the first year it played under the baton of Maurice Abravanel. In later years, she headed the Correspondence Studies at the University of Utah Bookstore where she became an institution in and of herself.

Kitty was a lady-elegant, gracious and witty. She was a warm, loving person and she knew that warmth and love was reciprocated by all of her family and friends. Everyone who knew her will know the sorrow of her passing.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Katherine G. Thomas of Salt Lake City; and Jan Bar-Nof of Givat Haim Meuhad, Israel; a son, Hugh C. Garner also of Salt Lake City; a sister, Jeannette Morrell, Salt Lake City; and brother, Joseph R. Morrell and his wife, Patricia, of San Francisco, Calif.

At her specific instruction, there will not be a funeral service, but her friends are invited to a gathering with her family at Le Parisien Restaurant (upper Floor), 417 South 300 East, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 25. Cremation arrangements were made under the direction of Independent Professional Services.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any contributions be made in her name to the Utah Symphony. She would like that.
