Phillips Junior College in Salt Lake City is not among the 12 slated for closure nationwide, officials said Friday.

Wayne Wilson, president of the Salt Lake business college, said, "We're not included in those being closed nationally."Located at 3098 S. Highland Drive, the school serves 300 business students. It has been in operation for 12 years, Wilson said.

Mississippi-based Phillips Colleges Inc. announced this week that it will close 12 of its 38 business schools to settle a dispute with the federal government over student aid money.

The Department of Education had tried to stop the for-profit college from receiving $3.7 million in federally guaranteed student loans after auditors accused the firm of violating department regulations.

After Phillips went to court to force release of the money, the government agreed to a settlement that avoided a closure of all the Phillips schools.

Gail Norris, Utah associate commissioner of higher education for student loans, said there have been no significant complaints against the Salt Lake Phillips.

"The local one appears to be a good one and it doesn't appear to be caught up in the problems the chain is having," Norris said.
