I found the "accuracy" flag on page B5 of your Oct. 13 edition quite amusing after I had read the "Sardine Canyon" highway article on B1.
1. The names of the canyons through which Highway 89/91 passes between Brigham City to Logan are Box Elder Canyon, Dry Canyon and Wellsville Canyon. None of them has ever been named Sardine Canyon.2. The highest point on this stretch of highway is named Sardine Summit because 50 or more years ago the highway did traverse Sardine Canyon.
3. In about 1946, an asphalt surfaced road was constructed in Wellsville Canyon up to the northern edge of the Dry Lake basin. From there the road continued south-southeast, down through the basin and - by means of a massive cut-and-fill on the south side of the basin - up to the Sardine Summit. That road became the new route for Highway 89/91. The old road through Sardine Canyon was virtually abandoned. Over the intervening years there have been several improvements to the new highway, but none of them has taken it out of those three basic canyons: Box Elder, Dry and Wellsville.
4. I realize that there are some TV news people and weather forecasters who still call it "Sardine Canyon" but that doesn't make it right. "Sardine Summit" could be correctly used if put in the proper context.
