French dentist Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761), considered the father of dentistry, was born in Brittany and later served as a surgeon's apprentice in the French Navy, Specializing in dentistry.
Fauchard afterward developed a large practice in Paris. He published the first dental textbook, "The Surgeon Dentist" (1728) which was long considered the most authoritative work on the subject. It contained the first detailed descriptions of dental techniques and of many dental diseases and ailments.
