A man who tried to circumvent a one-mile trail by swimming in the Colorado River was swept away by currents and remained missing a day later.
Rescuers searched by air and ground Sunday for Troy Fortney, 26, Los Angeles, said Mallory Smith, a spokeswoman for the park.Fortney and Fred Zernik, 29, also of Los Angeles, were with a group on a day hike Saturday when they stepped into the river about 1 p.m.
The men were trying to avoid the approximately milelong walk from the South Kaibab Trail, which the group took into the canyon, to the Bright Angel Trail, which they planned to take back up, Smith said.
Zernik was also swept downstream but was rescued by helicopter after he became stranded on some rocks beside the river. Zernik was treated and released from the Grand Canyon Samaritan Medical Center.
Fortney's disappearance is the second such incident at the canyon this year, Smith said.
