Tom Hanks said he chose Erie, Pa., as the setting for his latest movie, "That Thing You Do!," which he wrote, directed and is starring in. The plot involves a rock band that Hanks' character manages in 1964.The actor, who most recently played astronaut Jim Lovell in "Apollo 13," said he discovered Erie 12 years ago on his way to Toronto.

"Because I was bored with the freeway, I took a local route through town," Hanks told the Erie Daily Times.

Hanks won back-to-back Oscars in 1994 and 1995 for his starring roles in "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump."
