Thousands of voters from Hawaii to Maine will mark Valentine's Day with speak outs, marches and rallies. The 39-state National Day of Action will allow voters to show elected officials that they support programs designed to assist poor children and their parents.

Utah's JEDI Women (Justice and Economic Dignity and Independence) came up with the idea for the national rally. Its theme is "Our Children's Hearts Are in Your Hands."Participants include members of the religious community, grassroots activists, academicians, students, social workers, service providers, low-income individuals and other voters who are concerned about the damage that will be done to low-income families and communities if proposals to eliminate America's social safety net are enacted, said Deeda Seed, JEDI Women.

A rally will be held Tuesday from 12:15 to 1 p.m. at the Federal Building in Salt Lake City, on the southeast corner of 100 South and State Street. Speakers include the Rev. Janet Swift, Trinity AME Church; Suzanne Weiss, principal of Guadalupe School; and families who would be affected by policy changes.

JEDI Women have collected more than 4,000 valentine postcards that will be delivered to the offices of Utah's congressional delegation following the rally.
