Sconecutter soon will be the city's newest restaurant.
Jerald Warner, company owner expects to break ground on the 2,800-square-foot facility at approximately 1050 N. Main by the middle of March. It will be the first Sconecutter in Davis County."We really like the area and the growth that's happening up there," Warner said of the reason for selecting Layton. "There's a tremendous retail base there, and we feel it is a great opportunity."
The Layton restaurant will employ approximately 30 people, and Warner expects it to have annual gross sales of about $800,000. It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Warner believes his final plans are now ready for approval by the Layton Planning Commission. He said plans were delayed because the Utah Department of Transportation required he make some adjustments to the quarter-acre site because a traffic signal will be added at the nearby intersection later this year.
The Layton location was also selected because Warner has able to form a good working relationship with the Ream's store just to the east. Sconecutter will be building on the empty pad in front of the grocery store near Granite Furniture and Hometown Buffet.
Warner said Sconecutter likes to think of itself as a step above fast food. It offers indoor dining, doesn't cook food until it is ordered, and its sandwiches range in price from $2.50 to $3.69.
He said the restaurant offers scone sandwiches and tacos. It also features shakes, yogurt and specialty fries.
Sconecutter, a Utah family-owned company, has nine restaurants. The company recently opened a new facility in St. George. The Warner currently own seven of the Sconecutters, while Randy and Rusty Barton own one each. The Warners will also own the new Layton restaurant.
The company started in Salt Lake County 18 years ago.
