U.S. sweeps all-around at PanAm Games
MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina - U.S. gymnasts Shannon Miller, Amanda Borden and Amy Chow swept the all-around event in the Pan American Games. The United States also won four of the five swimming events Tuesday.
Soccer scandal rocks England
SOUTHAMPTON, England - In English biggest game-fixing scandal in 30 years, goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar and two other players were arrested.
Grobbelaar, who plays for Southampton, was arrested with Wimbledon goalie Hans Seger and Aston Villa striker John Fashanu following a four-month investigation into allegations of players taking bribes from an Asian gambling syndicate.

NFL denies report of Sapp's drug tests
PHOENIX - The NFL denied that Warren Sapp, a former Miami defensive tackle expected to be a top draft pick, had tested positive for cocaine.
The New York Times reported that Sapp had tested positive - along with six other players - for marijuana and cocaine at last month's league scouting combine in Indianapolis. The league statement did not mention marijuana, but several team sources said Sapp had indeed tested positive.
Arizona's Stoudamire cleared to play
TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona guard Damon Stoudamire was cleared to play in Thursday's NCAA tournament opener, the university announced.
The NCAA found Stoudamire violated a rule because his father accepted an airline ticket from an agent and ordered the player suspended for a game. That suspension was served Saturday against Arizona State.
Teammate Ben Davis remained ineligible under a separate violation.
Wisconsin fires first-year coach
MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin coach Stan Van Gundy was fired after directing the Badgers to a 13-14 record in his only season. Van Gundy, 35, took over the team when Stu Jackson left to become general manager of the NBA's expansion Vancouver Grizzlies. Van Gundy had four years left on his contract.
Irvan returns to resume racing career
DARLINGTON, S.C. - Ernie Irvan slipped back into his race car for the first time since a crash left his career and future in doubt.
Irvan, unconscious for two days following a near-fatal practice accident Aug. 20 at Michigan Speedway, breezed around Darlington Raceway, even setting an unofficial course record of 30.26 seconds in his Busch Grand National car.
Olympic tickets easy to order
ATLANTA - Fulfilling its promise to make Olympic tickets easy to order, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games plans to put 36 million brochures offering 7 million tickets in grocery and home-improvement stores around the country. Two 1996 Olympics sponsors - Coca-Cola Co. and Home Depot - will distribute the 48-page brochures beginning May 1.
Cowens may make another comeback
SAN ANTONIO - Hall of Fame center Dave Cowens may make another comeback and join the San Antonio Spurs for the playoffs.
Cowens, 46, is an assistant coach for the Spurs and if activated would assume the role the team had hoped injured Moses Malone would fill. Cowens retired in 1990 after 10 years with Boston and then played 40 games with Milwaukee in 1982-83.
Big Sky names new commissioner
BOISE, Idaho - Doug Fullerton, athletic director at Montana State University for 11 years, has been named to succeed retiring Big Sky Conference Commissioner Ron Stephenson on July 1.
Portland State seeks to join Big Sky
PORTLAND, Ore. - A special committee at Portland State has recommended that the Vikings join the Big Sky Conference.
