Former Salt Lake County Commissioner Jim Bradley may have lost his bid for re-election last November, but he is a big winner in the eyes of local environmental and recreation groups.

A coalition of such groups recently honored Bradley with the first-ever Pfeifferhorn/Conservation Leadership Award, created to recognize individuals who have made extraordinary efforts to protect the natural environment of Utah.

Bradley was cited for his role in helping to restore Millcreek Canyon; downzoning the foothills to protect them from development and preserve access to trails; promoting a full-service recycling office; championing the preservation of the Jordan River environs; and opposing plans for a Dimple Dell golf course.

"When future generations ask who the heroes were in battling the shortsighted forces that threaten our quality of life, the answer will always include the name Jim Bradley," said Tom Berggren, a board member for the Citizens Committee to Save Our Canyons, one of the groups sponsoring what will become an annual award.
