The city still wants a Flying J travel plaza, but not at the location where the Brigham City company had hoped to build one of its gas station-restaurant-convenience store complexes.
The City Council on Tuesday overturned a Planning Commission decision and rejected Flying J Inc.'s proposal to construct a travel plaza on 13 acres just off I-15 at Draper's 12300 South exit. The facility was to include a 150-seat Country Market restaurant and enough gas pumps to serve three tractor trailers and 12 cars at once.
"We felt it was not in the best interest because of traffic congestion. It's right off the freeway, and we're already having so many problems there," Mayor Elaine Redd said Wednesday. "We had a number of letters asking us not to approve that because of traffic problems."
Redd said the city has encouraged Flying J to build the travel plaza a few miles south on the Draper side of the Bluffdale exit at 14400 South.
Redd said other developers are interested in the Flying J property, located on the northeast corner off of the freeway. Flying J also planned to build a 100-room Crystal Inn motel on the site.
