Eleven students from Brigham Young University and BYU-Hawaii were recognized Thursday as winners of the eighth annual David O. McKay Essay Contest.

The winners were announced by Richard Cracroft, director of BYU's Center for the Study of Christian Values in Literature, during the weeklong "Literature and Belief Colloquium '95" at BYU.The theme for the contest was "The Restored Gospel and Applied Christianity." It was open to undergraduate and graduate students at BYU, BYU-Hawaii, Ricks College and the LDS Institutes of Religion.

In the undergraduate division, Matthew H. Kennington, a human-biology major from Hoytsville, Summit County, took top honors for his essay titled "Mud." Guenevere Nelson from Mesa, Ariz., took second for her entry, "Te necessito, si."

In the graduate division there was no first-place prize awarded, but Rochelle E. Fankhauser, an English major at BYU-Hawaii from Hamilton, New Zealand, was awarded second place for her essay, "Not My Feet Only."

Emily Bankhead of Provo received third-place honors in the undergraduate division for her essay, "Of Heart and Hand." Also receiving a third-place award was Zina Hall from Orem for "A Big Enough Umbrella for Singing in the Rain."

In the graduate division, Sean E. Brotherson from Orem took third for his essay, "Beauty for Ashes." John Charles Duffy, also from Orem, received a fourth-place award in the undergraduate division for "The Allegory of the Olives."

In the undergraduate category, honorable mentions were awarded to Timothy Bryan Fellers for "Jesus Christ and the Process of Leadership," Todd Leishman for "Joy Trip," and J. Randall Farmer for "Living Leftovers."

The contest is funded by a gift from the late Obert C. Tanner and his wife Grace.
