Tommy Prothro dies
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tommy Prothro, who took Oregon State and UCLA to the Rose Bowl in consecutive years and went on to coach in the NFL, has died after a three-year bout with cancer. He was 74.
Prothro died Sunday at his home. He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1985, but it worsened in January 1993.
"I have cancer and nobody knows how it's going to go from there," Prothro said shortly before his death. "I certainly don't intend to give in."
Prothro, a 1991 inductee into the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame, coached Heisman Trophy winners Terry Baker (Oregon State, 1962) and Gary Beban (UCLA, 1967).
He was the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams for two seasons, 1971 and 1972, finishing with a 14-12-2 record. He went to the San Diego Chargers the next season and resigned early in the 1978 season with a 21-39 record.

Dixie wins Region 18 title
ST. GEORGE - Dixie College won the Region 18 baseball championship with an 8-2 victory over Ricks College at Hurst Field on Saturday.
After losing its first game of the tournament, 6-1 to College of Southern Idaho, Dixie's bats came alive. The Rebels won their next four games, including scores of 14-3 against Snow College, 11-0 over College of Southern Idaho and 12-8 against Ricks.
In the championship game, the Rebels produced 18 hits and didn't commit any errors while thier pitchers allowed only six hits in the nine inning game. Pitcher Lance Lambert entered the game in the third inning to pick up the win giving him a 11-4 season record.
Peck gets Cyprus post
Dave Peck is headed home. The Cyprus High graduate, who previously coached football at North Sanpete, Bingham and Hunter, has been named head coach at his alma mater. He replaces Jerry Simonson who resigned after last season.
Baugh going to AFA
Mountain Crest senior Eric Baugh, who earned first team all-state after averaging 13 points and 4.7 assists for the Mustangs, has been accepted into the Air Force Academy and will continue his basketball career with the Falcons.
BYU women's team 18th
BYU's women's golf team closed out its 1995 season by scoring a final round 315 at the NCAA West Regional Championships Saturday.
The Cougars 54-hole tally of 935 strokes placed them 18th in the 20-team field.
Arizona State caught up with San Jose State to tie for first place in team standings with 878 strokes. Although both teams were declared West Regional Champions, the Spartans, who led from the first day, will be seeded higher at nationals.
Sun Devil Wendy Ward took home the individual crown with a 210.
Scoring for the Cougars were Ai Lian Lim, 42nd (tie) 73-80-76 229; Catalina Navarro, 56th (tie) 73-82-80 235 and Susanne Gillemo 75-82-78 235; and Stephanie Belnap, 73rd (tie) 76-79-81 236. Anna Sralla had non-counting rounds of 84-86-84 254.
