An initiative petition aimed at preventing Park City from spending public funds on the 2002 Winter Games has been approved for circulation, an Olympic opponent said Wednesday.

Steve Pace, spokesman for Utahns For Responsible Public Spending, said the petition approved by Park City officials is virtually identical to the one rejected last week by Salt Lake City."What's legal in Park City, Salt Lake City is forcing us to sue them over," Pace said.

Utahns For Responsible Public Spending is asking the Utah Supreme Court to order Salt Lake City to let the petition be circulated. Arguments are scheduled to be heard by the court on May 10.

Although Salt Lake City would be the host of the Olympics if selected by the International Olympic Committee in June, Park City would be the site of ski races and other major events.
