Actor Christopher Reeve remained in serious but stable condition early Wednesday, and his long-term prospects following a horse-riding accident was uncertain.

Reeve's publicist, Lisa Kasteler of Los Angeles, said she did not know whether the actor was paralyzed by the neck injury he suffered over the weekend. She said Tuesday that he was conscious and talking with relatives."It takes some time before they can assess what the damage is," she said.

Neither Kasteler nor Reeve's doctor, Dr. John A. Jane, returned telephone calls Wednesday morning seeking comment on a report in the New York Post that the "Superman" star was on a respirator and fighting for his life.

Reeve, 42, was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville after a horse-riding accident Saturday. His wife, Dana, and extended family are also there, Kasteler said.
