Mason wins NBA's Sixth Man Award

NEW YORK - It wasn't points that got Anthony Mason the NBA Sixth Man Award, so it had to be a lot of other things.

"For him to achieve this is extra special because he doesn't do that," New York Knicks coach Pat Riley said Monday, referring to his muscular forward's 9.9 scoring average. "He is more of a complete, all-around player with an unorthodox body."

Mason, who received 47 of a possible 105 votes from a national media panel to easily outdistance Charlotte's Dell Curry who received 18 votes. San Antonio's Chuck Person was third with 12.

Mason, who was suspended for five games in March after a dispute with Riley, started only 11 of the 77 games he played and averaged a career-high 8.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He led the Knicks in shooting at 57 percent (287-of-507).

"I am very thankful to the Knicks for giving my first honest look and opportunity," said Mason.
