CHANGE

During her 62-year reign, England's Queen Victoria made no physical chanhges in the royal residences. At her death, all the rooms contained the same furnishings as when she had ascended the throne.

Shortly after her son, Edward VII, became king, he played host at Windson Castle to his mother's long-time friend, the former Empress Eugenie was shown to her suite, she recognized it as the one she had occupied on a visit a half-century earlier. Later, she told the king:

"What memories these rooms revive! Everything is the same as when I was here last. Only the mirror has been changed."
