Rick John Markel, Jr. passed away on June 26, at the age of 39.

He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. His friends and family remember his gentleness and sensitivity, as well as his creativity and the individuality found in his work. He enjoyed his dog, Tasha, the Wasatch Mountains, the Southern Utah Desert, and the spring peace of Pine Crest Canyon brought a light-hearted joy to him.Richard was born September 21, 1955 in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Suny at Buffalo with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1978. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1979 and worked as a self employed carpenter and woodworker. Recently, he attended the College of the Redwoods (fine cabinetmaking school, James Krenov, director) in Fort Bragg, California. He was a member of the Woodworker's Co-op in Salt Lake City.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Marie Markel of Largo, Fla.; his brothers and sisters, Kathy Schmitz of Clearwater, Fla.; Cyndie Smith of Rochester, N.Y.; Michael Markel of Eugene, Oregon; Wayne Markeo of Woodland Hills, Calif.; Janet Markel of Atlanta, Georgia; three nieces and his many friends, including Sandy Kerman of Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Following a private family viewing, an open prayer service will be held for Rick on Saturday, July 1, 1995 at 1 p.m., at the Holbrook Funeral Chapel, 3251 So. 2300 East, in Salt Lake City.
