Tristan Jones, as much an adventurer and humanitarian as he was a respected British author and sailor, has died of complications following a stroke. He was 71. He was living at the time in Phuket, a Thai island where he settled nearly a decade ago.

Jones wrote 17 marine adventure books, including "Ice," about the Arctic, and "The Incredible Voyage," about the Amazon; two novels and numerous short stories and articles about his adventures. His tales recounted death-defying sagas as well as moments of quiet contemplation.
