THE QUICK CHESS TOURNAMENT held in Ogden on July 8 was won by Igor Ivanov, a Russian chess master, who has been living in Utah. His quick chess rating is 2651 (reportedly 7th in the world). He scored 51/2 points out of a possible 6 for his first-place win and a $75 cash prize.

Jeff Phillips won second place and $50 with 5 points. His only loss was to Ivanov.Tied for first place in Class A (rated 1800-1999) with 4 points each were Mike Bond and Brian Harrow. First place Class B (1600-1799) was also a tie: Lee Hansen and Raymond Sundrin each scored 4 points for top honors. Roland Wright scored 4 points to take Class C honors (1400-1599), and Ambar Nayate scored 3 points for the Class D prize. Benjamin Dawson was top unrated.

- THE UTAH ACTION CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held on Saturday, July 29, at the Newgate Mall in Ogden. The five-round, Swiss-system tournament with a 30-minute per game time limit will begin with registration from 9-10 a.m. at the community room in the mall.
