Peter J. Stang, distinguished professor and chairman of the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the University of Utah's Rosenblatt Prize.
The $30,000 prize, the largest awarded at the U., was presented to Stang during the university's commencement ceremony in recognition of his work in organic chemistry.Stang, whose field of research includes reactive intermediates, mechanistic organometallic chemistry and enzyme inhibition, has written or co-written more than 200 scientific publications, including an advanced textbook on spectroscopy.
In 1992, Stang became only the fifth American scientist ever awarded an honorary degree by Moscow State University. He also received an honorary degree from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Stang was also the recipient of the 1977 Alexander von Humboldt Senior U.S. Scientist Award and the 1987 Distinguished Research Award. A native of Germany, Stang received his bachelor's degree at DePaul University in 1963 and his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley in 1966. He joined the U. faculty in 1966.
