Provided everything goes as planned, ALCO Discount Store officials in Roosevelt say their doors will open in late September.

Construction on the 22,000-square-foot building on the northwest corner of U.S. 40 and State Street began in early May and was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.ALCO store manager Darrin Wildman said merchandise should be arriving soon, but he declined to announce a specific opening date.

Wildman and assistant store manager Shawn Wilson recently completed interviews with prospective employees and are now extending a total of 34 job offers. Twenty of the positions are full time and 10 are part time, he said. Four people will be hired for supervisory positions to oversee the store's four major departments. Wildman said 269 applications were received and 230 people were interviewed.

Wildman and Wilson said they are pleased at the warm reception they've received from the community. "We'll hopefully help out the town as much as we can by providing some jobs and keeping the money here. Everyone has made us feel very welcome, the other merchants, everyone."

ALCO has found its niche in smaller communities, mainly in the central United States, but is expanding into the West. There are currently 104 ALCO stores. ALCO Discount Stores represent a division of Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc. with headquarters in Abilene, Kan. In addition to the ALCO Discount Stores, the company operates 37 variety or specialty stores in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska.
