Fred Meyer opened new stores at 455 S. 500 East and 9000 S. Redwood Road in West Jordan Thursday, the culmination of a $100 million expansion program that was announced by the Portland-based chain in early 1994.

The 500 East store cost $22 million and has 174,000-square-feet of space devoted to groceries and a variety of other departments on 7.5 acres leased from Hermes Associates. There are 730 parking spaces on two levels, and the landscaping consists of 82 trees, 1,118 shrubs and 435 groundcover plants.Wadman Corp., Ogden, was the general contractor that started on the project in September 1994. Because of the shape of the land, the store has two upper entrances and one lower entrance, escalators and elevators.

Hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days per week; the pharmacy is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The jewelry store will be open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days per week.

The 170,000-square-foot West Jordan store replaces the old 100,000 square-foot store less than a mile away. The hours will be the same as the 500 East store.

The facility, built by R&O Construction, Ogden, is on 15.7 acres and features 880 parking spaces. It cost more than $21 million for land, site work, demolition, fixtures and equipment. Washington Mutual occupies about 2,000 square-feet inside the new store.
