Joe Costanzo's excellent article about the failings of some USU Greek fraternities only told half the story. While it is true that a few fraternities do little more than mimic "Animal House" antics, there is another alternative.

Sigma Gamma Chi, a nationally recognized fraternity sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, makes a significant contribution and has a positive influence on the lives of young men, the college campuses and the communities wherever it is lo-cated.While a majority of fraternities have experienced declining and dwindling memberships in recent years, Sigma Gamma Chi is expanding across America with over 1,500 active members at more than 60 different universities.

Imagine a fraternity with no alcohol and no hazing but a strong commitment to brotherhood and service. According to Costanzo's article, USU administrators are proposing the adoption of a code for fraternities titled "Select 2000: A Return of Greek Values." Their concern is for organizations which have drifted and are no longer anchored firmly to the kinds of values that would strengthen young men. Sigma Gamma Chi is founded on the very values they seek to promote. The six fundamental ideals of Sigma Gamma Chi are: brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, spirituality, patriotism and service.

If the words "fraternity" and "sorority" leave you with a negative impression, come take a look at Sigma Gamma Chi and its sister sorority, Lambda Delta Sigma (3,300 members in 130 chapters).
