George Ellis Doty, Jr., M.D., died Sept. 27, 1995 of heart failure at age 87.
Born March 28, 1908 to Hannah Elizabeth McCarrey and George Ellis Doty in Richmond, Utah. He attended Utah State Agricultural College before serving as an LDS missionary in the Eastern States. He graduated from Brigham Young University and attended medical school at Northwestern University. He married Elizabeth Schaar, on Nov. 18, 1942. He served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of commander. After the war, Dr. Doty practiced as a physician-surgeon in North Hollywood, Calif. for 40 years. Dr. Doty was active in the Rotary Club and YMCA. In 1971 he name was inscribed in the YMCA Golden Book of Distinguished Service. He received the BYU Alumni Emeritus Club Special Recognition Award in 1993. With his son-in-law, Lyman Dayton, he co-founded Doty-Dayton Productions, which produced "Where the Red Fern Grows", "Seven Alone", and other films. Most recently he was the exeutive producer of the movie "Second Chance".In 1975 Dr. Doty retired from his medical practice to serve with his wife, Betty, as a medical missionary in Guatemala. Church callings include Stake Sunday School president, high councilman, bishop of Studio City, California Ward from 1982-1986 and ordinance worker in the Los Angeles Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Mrs. Lyman (Liz) Dayton, Mrs. Richard (Gigi) Butler, Mrs. Marian (Tina) Walker, 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Eda Smith, Preston, Idaho and Ina Parsons, Hood River, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his son, George Ellis Doty III.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 2, 1995 at 11 a.m. at Santa Clara Heights Stake Center. Visitations Sunday, October 1 from 7-8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary and on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. or the Stake Center prior to services. Interment: Santa Clara City Cemetery.
