"Evita" is about an Argentine woman. It was written by an Englishman. It was a big hit in the United States. An Italian-American lady named Madonna will star in the movie version, which is to be directed by Alan Parker, whose nationality we are frankly unsure of.

And lately the film's casting folk have been nailing down supernumeraries ("extras" to you) in - where?Translyvania.

Tierra del Fuego.

Hungary.

The answer is To be specific, Budapest.

- MORE ON THAT: In fact, a stringer for the New York Daily News is fortunate and savvy enough to be on the scene in Budapest, where she speaks with a couple of the Hungarians who themselves were fortunate and savvy enough to respond to the aforesaid cattle call.

"I like Madonna," 68-year-old Magda Turner tells the stringer. "She has guts."

"They asked me if I could ride a horse," observes 41-year-old Bela Kovacs, "and handle a sword."

- EVEN MORE: We admit to feeling a bit confused because the News story mentioned above says "Evita" will lens in Budapest because labor is cheap there, yet here's a report in USA Today saying that folks in Buenos Aires are expecting the Material Female and her crew to show up there for filming momentarily.

You figure it out. We merely add that the same report says that Evita-worshipping Argentines, displeased that the Ciccone woman has gotten the nod to portray their heroine, are going around town writing "Evita lives! Madonna get out" on every available wall.
