Colorado State (3-4, 2-1) scored in the first quarter after Damon Washington broke free with a 73-yard run. Washington, who rushed for 190 yards, scored in the third quarter on a 9-yard run.

Navy 20, Air Force 17

At Air Force Academy, Colo., Tom Vanderhorst kicked a 25-yard field goal with nine seconds left, giving Navy a victory over Air Force in the first game of the Commander-in-Chief Trophy series.

Vanderhorst's second field goal of the game was set up by Omar Nelson's 51-yard run, which came one play after Air Force tied the score 17-17 on a 49-yard field goal by Dallas Thompson with 2:11 left.

The victory gives Navy (4-1) the advantage in the race for the trophy that signifies superiority among the three military academies - Navy, Army and Air Force - in round-robin competition.

The Falcons (3-2) have been in possession of the trophy since 1989 and have won it outright six of the seven years since then. Navy and Air Force must still play Army, and a tie among the three academies would keep the trophy at the Air Force Academy.

The game featured a matchup of the nation's two top rushing quarterbacks - Navy's Chris McCoy and the Falcons' Beau Morgan. But it was a backup player who helped pull the victory out for Navy.

Air Force led 14-10 with 9:19 left in the fourth quarter after Steve Pipes picked off a McCoy pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown.

In the next series, McCoy led the Middies to the Air Force 45-yard line. At that point, senior Ben Fay came in to relieve McCoy and immediately threw a 45-yard scoring strike to Astor Heaven to give Navy a 17-14 lead.

Then it was Nelson's turn.

Nelson, who had rushed for only 21 yards up to that point, blasted through the Air Force line for 51 yards to put the ball on the Falcons' 14-yard line with 1:27 left. Fay tried the middle of the line for three plays before Vanderhorst was called on for his game-winning field goal.
