John Grisham is no fan of "The Chamber." That's the film version of his book, not the original story.

"I am happy to say that I had nothing to do with the making of `The Chamber,' " the author said this week in Jackson, Miss. "I think it's best if I leave it at that."The legal thriller, starring Gene Hackman and Chris O'Donnell, opened last weekend.

Grisham said he steered clear of the production because the script was so different from his book. He would not say what specific differences he disliked.

"A Time to Kill," another movie based on a Grisham novel with a racial theme, is also in theaters. Because both movies are based in Mississippi and deal with the Ku Klux Klan, Grisham said he wished they had not been released so closely together.
