Up to 26,400 mainly Burundi Hutu refugees fled their camp near the eastern Zairean town of Uvira Friday after fighting between the Zairean military and ethnic Tutsi rebels left three dead, senior aid workers said.

"I can confirm that Kagunga camp is now empty because of the fighting," said Fernando Del Mundo, spokesman for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR in Geneva.Three people were confirmed dead in the fighting, and a number of Banyamulenge clanspeople were taken prisoner, the aid worker said. The Banyamulenge are ethnic Tutsis.
