Brigham Young University will present a new multi-year scholarship program to better recruit and mentor gifted young men and women.
The Heritage Scholarship, now the most prestigious undergraduate award offered by BYU to incoming freshmen, will begin with the 1997-98 academic year and replaces what was previously known as the Trustees Scholarship. This scholarship encompasses the traditional Presidential Scholarship named after the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.BYU will offer this scholarship to select students who demonstrate a serious and diligent commitment to spiritual preparation and academic excellence. The scholarships, funded through money from the LDS Church and private individuals, represent an investment in students' education.
To be considered for a Heritage Scholarship, applicants must have a minimum composite ACT score of 31 and a minimum unweighted high school grade point average of 3.85. Students who have a minimum composite ACT score of 32 or higher may apply with an unweighted high school grade point average of 3.70.
Applicants will be evaluated in many areas such as religious commitment, character, academic excellence, service to others and passion for life.
From among the recipients, several students with unusual gifts and accomplishments will receive the Hinckley Scholarship, a Heritage Scholarship named after the president of the LDS Church. BYU-sponsored National Merit Scholarship recipients will also be selected from among the Heritage Scholarship applicants.
Interested students must complete a Heritage Scholarship application, available from the Scholarship Office, A-41 ASB, PO Box 21009, Provo, UT 84601-1009. The scholarship application deadline is Jan. 15, 1997.
